06.11.09 :: PG :: QT :: Drugs

The Institute of Biomedical Research found that 9 in 10 Euro banknotes in Germany had minute amounts of cocaine on them left by abusers who used the Euros to snort the drug. Similar results have been found with American dollars in some urban areas. Illegal drugs and their effects swirl all around our kids today. It’s in our music, our schools and even on our money. Talk to your foster kids about the dangers of using illegal drugs. Believe it or not, your words may be the first they've ever heard from an adult on the subject.  And do it as quickly as possible. There are lots of pushers looking to cash in on your kids becoming users.

06.10.09 :: PG :: QT :: Pre-Marital Sex

According to Dr. Jim Burns, teens engage in pre-martial sex mainly because of three factors: peer pressure, their emotional involvement exceeds their maturity level, and lack of information. If you hit these three head-on, you can greatly reduce the chance of your kids sack-hopping. First, on peer pressure, know your children’s friends, their parents, and what activities they engage in when you’re not around. Secondly, you need to gauge whether your child is really ready for a dating relationship. This is a qualitative, not a quantitative judgment, and may vary from child to child. Third, kids are grossly misinformed on STD’s and the myth of safe sex. See how they are both not truly portrayed on primetime television. They also are unprepared for the emotional baggage sexual activity can bring. To sum up, the key to winning the battle against pre-marital sex is to continually address your children’s peer pressure, emotional maturity and misinformation.

06.09.09 :: PG :: QT :: Refrigerator Idea

Why don’t you get a small erasable marker board for your fridge and make up a weekly achievement list for your foster kids? Praise them for setting a goal and reaching it. Whether it’s acing a math test or keeping their room clean, children like to be recognized. This is just another simple way to heap encouragement on ones who really need it. It’s impossible to give them enough.
